This year’s 2019 best footballer of the year award goes to Lionel Messi and it left a lot of fans surprised. Many expected Cristiano Ronaldo or Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to win it.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have both won the best Fifa player of the year 5 times each. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is a newcomer nominee for the award and he came short.
Argentina/Barcelona footballer Messi, 32, beat Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk to win it for the 6th time.
Messi had a successful year but he failed in some part of his career. He who won the Spanish La Liga title with Barcelona last season and the European golden boot having scored 54 goals in 58 games in all competitions. However, some fans think Messi had a subpar year because he lost the Copa America title contention to Brazil and he failed to win the Champions League.
