About 20 people killed in Stampede during anointing service in Tanzania

No fewer than 20 people have lost their lives and several others heavily wounded during a church service at a stadium in northern Tanzania. It was reported that stampede killed the people during an anointing service for blessing by Pastor Boniface Mwamposa.

Trouble started when a legion of people was rushing to get the anointing first, the service was tagged ‘Blessing anointing’. Everyone wanted to get the anointing fast to prevent a story that touch which could be that the oil has finished.

According to reports, more than a hundred people were gathered in a stadium in Moshi town near the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. It was reported that they crushed one another while struggling to get anointing dubbed ‘Blessing oil’.

A top Government official simply identified as Warioba revealed to Reuters that:

Twenty people died and 16 others were injured in the incident,” Moshi district commissioner Kippi Warioba told Reuters by telephone. Five of those killed were children,

The stampede occurred when the worshippers were rushing to get anointed with blessed oil.

In fact, authorities fear that the death toll is most likely to increase due to the nature of the crowd and the situation of the stadium when casualties were counted. It was reported that the stadium was blackout when 20 dead persons were counted. Reasonably, there might be more casualties.

Tanzania is one of the African countries with a high prevalence of poverty. Quite a number of people in the country live below the poverty line. So it is expected that people would turn to the corridor of spirituality when there is a failure in the system that oughts to provide for their needs.
