After Dropping ‘His Excellency’ Title, Nigerians Attack Governor of Lagos

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state

Nigerians on Twitter have placed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State under severe attack following his announcement that he has dropped the title of ‘His Excellency’. They described his announcement as a misplaced priority as they lament the state of Lagos roads.

Prior to the attacks, Governor Sanwo-Olu said in his series of tweets that the title of ‘His Excellency’ signifies ‘authority, position in government, authoritarian disposition, executive arrogance, and a demi-god mystique’. He announced that he prefers the title of Mr Governor instead.

He said: “This demi-god mystique spreads over the entire machinery of the executive arm of the government, symbolising an authoritarian disposition on the governed…

“Elected and appointed persons now see themselves as oppressors who can do no wrong and must be served, rather than serve the people.

The governor said he prefers the electorates to call him ‘Mr. Governor’ rather than ‘His Excellency’ because the former would always remind him that he has a responsibility to serve the people.

Nigerians React

In response to the announcement, both Lagosians and non-Lagosians on Twitter have continued to question the impact such a change will make. Some sarcastically gave a thumbs up while others wonder what the change of title will do to change the condition of things in the state.

For instance, @ufuomagbudje said, “If that’s what it takes to get our roads fixed, sure Mr governor”. While @Edward_Onoriode said, “This is commendable but sir, the roads all over Lagos is in bad shape… The entire roads in Lagos need overhauling and regrading.

As the attacks continued, @Sheddi_younG tweeted that “whether a Bros Governor or Uncle Governor or Mr Governor… Na work we wan see!” @BadmanisDimka added his voice to the attacks by urging the governor to “move to the part where all Roads are Reconstructed.
