Entertainment Blessings of 2019 in Nigeria: Nollywood Movies Made Almost N7bn in Cinemas

The year 2019 is such a blessed year for the entertainment industry in Nigeria. Every aspect of the industry experienced tremendous growth – from music, comedy, pageants and Nollywood (Movies).

The music industry, as usual, took the lead and shook not just the continent of Africa but the whole world. Nigerian music artists held sold-out concerts, won and got nominated for A-lists awards across the world.

Nigerian comedy also stood its ground. The A-list comedians in the country continued with their sold-out concerts across the world. Some of them ventured into other aspects of the entertainment industry.

The winner of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2019, Nyekachi Douglas also stunned Nigerians at the Most Beautiful Girl in the World pageant as she made it to the last 5 of the prestigious world annual event.

As for Nollywood, the quality of movie productions in the country took the cinema culture to a whole new level in 2019. The year witnessed the highest productions of Cinema worthy movies which did very well at the box office in Nigeria.

In fact, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NVFCB) which is in charge of regulating the movies sector in Nigeria, says Nigerian movies generated nearly between N6.4bn and N6.7bn at cinemas nationwide in 2019. The Executive Director of the board, Adedayo Thomas, disclosed this in an interview with The Punch on Sunday.

“The box office generated almost N7bn in 2019. Between N6.4bn an N6.7bn was generated. But from information at our disposal, money generated from DVD sales may have been higher. This is because less than 20 per cent of the population is watching cinema”, Mr Thomas said.

This is so possible because the year 2019 saw the release of some of the finest movies that did so well at the box office. Some of such movies are Merry Men 2: Another Mission, The Bling Lagosian, Living in Bondage among others.

Well, just like the proverbial ” Oliver Twist”, we hope 2020 which marks the beginning of a new decade will bring more glory to the entertainment industry, especially Nollywood.
