‘It’s an honor to be a part of such a pivotal moment’, Genevieve Reacts as Lionheart got picked for Oscars

Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji has reacted to the selection of Lionheart by the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee.

The movie which was directed by the Nollywood actress has been chosen to represent Nigeria for the 2020 Academy Award for Best International Film.

Nigeriatunes reports that the 12-man NOSC team comprises of some notable Nollywood stakeholders of international standing. The movie was picked because it aligned with the rules.

Lionheart is being streamed on Netflix

Lionheart was also selected based on a statutory vetting and subsequent voting of entries received from Nigerian filmmakers at home and in the Diaspora. Most Nigerian filmmakers, therefore, settled for the movie produced by Chinny Onwugbenu.

Genevieve via her Instagram page noted that Lionheart was the first-ever entry for Nigeria. She also said it is an honour to be a part of such a pivotal moment in the history of Nigerian cinema.

“A moment we know will be replicated as our stories continue to resonate with audiences around the world. On behalf of the entire LIONHEART team and TEN Productions, we are grateful for this recognition and proud to carry the torch. Thank you all for the love and support thus far,” she wrote on her Instagram page.

We are ready for Oscars

NOSC Chairman, Chineze Anyaene said the movie was picked because there has been a significant improvement this year.

“While we cannot say that what we have are the best that Nigeria is capable of producing. It is heart-lifting to know that, from the strength of the entries received this year. We are truly ready for the Oscars.”

Chineze also said filmmakers are gradually taking the Oscar rules into consideration because there is no doubt that it is going to be more competitive, going forward.


Ahead of every Oscar Awards, every country outside the United States is expected to submit one film as long as it’s not primarily in English.
