Confusion was thrown in the air yesterday in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja after one Police Inspector, John Markus committed murder after he fired shot that killed his colleague. It was reported while a police corporal lost his life after he got shot by his colleague, another police officer sustained injury from the gunshot.
The unfortunate incident happened during the early hours of Saturday 21, in Dutse area of Abuja.
According to information available, Markus was on duty as a station guard on the day of the unpleasant incident. It was reported that Markus fired a series of shots into the air. Markus was rebuked by the police corporal identified as Mathew Akubo. Consequently, Markus faced the corporal and shot him in the head.
Furthermore, the sound attracted the attention of the Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Ovanu, who came to know what has happened. However, he was shot in the arm by Markus.
Subsequently, the police Inspector John Markus, after some minutes shot himself through the mouth.
In a statement released by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officers, ASP Yusuf Mariam confirmed the death of two Police officers from the command. In her words
“The FCT Police Command regrettably condemns the unfortunate incident that took place at Dutse Alhaji Division on 21 December 2019 at about 0430hrs involving the murder of a police corporal by an inspector of police.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased inspector fired a shot at the corporal leading to his death and injuring a deputy superintendent of police before he committed suicide.
“While commiserating with family members of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident and put measures in place to forestall the reoccurrence of such incident.
“The command urges residents to remain calm while reiterating its commitment to provide adequate security during the Christmas/New year Celebrations,”
