The administration of President Donald Trump of the United States is at it again; on Thursday, January 23, 2020, the administration made an announcement that will surely break the hearts of many pregnant women who always dream of giving their children a more secure future as citizens of the US.
Trump’s administration has declared that the US will no longer grant visas to pregnant women who intend to fly into the country for the purpose of delivery, starting from today, January 24, 2020.
It is the constitutional right of every child born in the United States to be issued the citizen by birth status. This right has made most aristocratic families, especially in underdeveloped or developing countries to always fly their pregnant woman to the US for the purpose of giving birth in the country.
It is also a very common trend among wealthy individuals and celebrities in Nigeria to ensure that their pregnant women secure a green card for their children. Hence, they fly pregnant women abroad, mostly to the US three months or less to the time the pregnancy will be due.
But the new rule Trump’s administration through the State Department introduced yesterday, has made such a practise which the US described as “birth tourism” unacceptable.
The new rule gives the US government more power to deny certain visas to women if officials have any reason to believe that their intention is to give birth in the US so that they can obtain US citizenship for their children.
The new rule says: The State Department “does not believe that visiting the United States for the primary purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship for a child, by giving birth in the United States — an activity commonly referred to as ‘birth tourism’ — is a legitimate activity for pleasure or of a recreational nature”.
Hence, the White House, “will no longer issue temporary visitor (B-1/B-2) visas to aliens seeking to enter the United States for ‘birth tourism.”
This is among the stringent policies the Trump’s administration has introduced to make the country “great again” as President Trump always says. Recall that the administration recently disclosed that it plans to increase the list of countries that will be restricted from gaining entry into the US. Unfortunately, Nigeria is among the seven countries on the draft list that is reportedly under consideration.
