The Supreme Court will on Friday give reasons for dismissing the appeal filed by the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The former vice-president had challenged the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23, 2019, presidential election.
Nigeriatunes reports that the apex court had, in a summary judgment delivered on October 30, dismissed the appeal. It also said that it would give the reasons for its decision on a date to be later announced.
A seven-man panel of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, had, in the summary judgment, affirmed the victory of President Muhammad Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress, at the poll.
The court’s registrar, Ibrahim Gold, signed a notice sent to lawyers representing parties to the appeal on Wednesday. The notice indicated that the apex court would give its full reasons for its judgment on Friday.
The notice read: “Take note that the Supreme Court of Nigeria will give its reason for the judgement delivered on October 30, 2019. Also, the reason in the Appeal will be listed on November 15, 2019 at 9.00am.
“AND FURTHER TAKE NOTICE that in accordance with the Supreme Court Rules, this court has served you the Notice if you received it on your telephone.”
The expected reasons to be offered will likely put to rest various speculations by lawyers. Also, put to rest insinuations by politicians about the action of the apex court or even raise fresh ones. It will be recalled that shortly after the judgment, lawyers to the appellants have faulted the nation’s electoral laws. They also blamed it for the loss of their clients.
In his immediate reaction to the verdict of the apex court, lead counsel to the appellants, Dr Livy Uzuokwu (SAN) blamed the loss of their clients on the state of the nation’s law. Hw added that the laws needed urgent amendment.
