The embattled President of the Students Union Government (SUG), Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, Adegboye Olatunji, has insisted that he was not a cultist despite being caught “red-handed”.
Olatunji became a talking point on all social media platforms during the weekend when the news broke out that the Ogun State Police Command arrested him alongside one other cultist in full regalia.
But when he was paraded at the headquarters of the Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Olatunji told the press that he didn’t know how he found himself in the bush with the cultist.
According to him, he left his room at about 7 am on Sunday, 9 February 2020, for the church service in Ilaro when he was charmed to the bush by unidentified cultists. He said he and the Rector of the institution attend the same church.
The impeached SUG president lamented that the school didn’t treat him fairly for not investigating the matter before suspending him.
He said: “I am not a cult member. I don’t know how I got into the bush. I was charmed, I don’t know how it happened.
“I was going to the church around 7 am on Sunday. I was going to a church in llaro. My rector also goes to that church and he hates anything cultism.
“I don’t know anything about this; I’m not a member. I didn’t confess anything. They searched my room; they didn’t find anything.”
However, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, insisted that Adegboye Olatunji was arrested in his regalia and the police refused to allow him to pull it off “so that he doesn’t deny”. According to the commissioner, Olatunji had confessed to the crime.
When the other suspect, Olanrewaju, who was arrested alongside Adegboye, was asked whether he knew Adegboye or not, he said, “I am not a cultist, I have never seen him (Olatunji) before we were brought here. Someone called me on the telephone and that was all. I don’t know how I got to the bush.”
