The head coach of Barcelona, Valverde protects Griezmann despite not scoring against his former club Athletico Madrid. Ernesto Valverde defends the forward, Antoine Griezmann even when he fails to score, as Barca wins 1-0 on Sunday.

Lionel Messi celebrates his decisive goal

Ernest Valverde praises the composure and performance of the Frenchman during his return to Athletico Madrid for Barcelona. Griezmann has five goals and three assists in 18 games since joining Barca from Atletico.

However, facing his former club for the first time is not an easy moment for the France international forward. He struggles to have an impact at the Wanda Metropolitano, where Lionel Messi’s 86th goal proves magical.

Following this, the late second-half goal by Leo seems decisive and secures Barca to top the La Liga table. Ahead of their Real Madrid counterpart who has the same league point of 31 each.

Meanwhile, it has been a correct prediction that the French forward will be tacky against his former teammates. It is difficult when you face players you have played alongside for many years.

According to Barca’s head coach Valverde, ”He was whistled a little bit. He was fighting and working hard. He had a really good chance and could maybe have controlled the ball better. It’s something that happens when you come back to a place where you spent so long for the first time.

“That was what happened to Griezmann. He fought to overcome it and I think he played well.” he ended.

It would have been a goal-less draw if  Messi did not score the last four-minute magical goal. The Argentine forward is an advantage in such a tight game.

Barca successively winning five straight matches in all competitions will host Real Mallorca in La Liga next weekend.
