Wizkid Sets Another record, Becomes First Nigerian to Shine in Soul Train


Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid is gradually becoming the most decorated Nigerian Musician. He has set another record in the country’s music industry as he won Soul Train Music Awards’ Songwriters’ award.

The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show that honours the best in black music and entertainment. It is produced by the makers of Soul Train, the television program from which it takes its name.

This year’s edition which was hosted by Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold was held on Sunday, November 17th 2019 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, USA.

The Songwriters’ award is one of the 12 categories of the annual awards which Wizkid won for his contribution to Beyonce’s song ‘Brown Skin Girl’.

Since the song was a collaborative effort, Wizkid shares the award with Beyoncé Knowles, Carlos At. John, Adio Marchant and Shawn Carter.

Other credited writers of the song are Stacy BartheAnathi Mnyango, Michael Uzowuru, and Richard Isong. They also share in the award.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time the Starboy has been nominated for this award show. He was nominated for Best Dance Performance in 2017 for ‘Come Closer’ and in 2016 for the Rhythm and Bars category for ‘One Dance.

Those were also among his many first in the industry. In fact, in 2016, he was awarded a plague of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for his effort on Drake’s hit, One Dance; no Nigeria artist in recent times is known for such an honour.
